Pro-Ject CD Box S3 CD Player

The CD Box S3 is the first product of Pro-Ject’s new S3 line. Not only is the circuit design reworked, the case has also been significantly changed and the CD Box S3 introduces a completely new S3 size. Besides the new full aluminium casework, the CD Box S3 also features a 1,54“ display with colour inversion function which shows you all relevant information you need to enjoy your favourite CDs. Easily control the CD player with the buttons on the front, or with the supplied remote control.

In contrast to DVD or Blu-ray Disc players, a pure CD player is frequently better in the playback of stereo CDs. The drive in the CD Box S3 enables 1:1 bit-accurate CD playback. The all new DAC chip provides the best digital analogue conversion with a bit depth & sampling rate up to 32bit/384kHz. The slot-in mechanism smoothly draws in the CD and, after a few seconds, it is ready to play. For even more versatility and no limits, the S/PDIF coaxial output can feed an external DAC. This way, you can let your favourite high-end DAC convert the accurately transferred bit stream from the CD.

The CD Box is the perfect addition to any HiFi system.

Pro-ject S3 CD player
31 March 2024  |

This replaced an old Quad 44 player which gave up the ghost after many years use. I don’t play CDs that often these days but was very surprised at the excellent quality of reproduction for the price paid. 5 stars any day!

Small Box, Clean Sound
26 March 2024  |

I needed a compact footprint CD player to replace a Cyrus CD8x which has been misbehaving. I don't play many CDs nowadays, so I looked for a decent player at a reasonable price for when I do play CDs.

The Pro-Ject CD Box S3 delivers all I need. On paper its performance spec is not far off the Cyrus (really!). It offers basic functionality, its physical construction is lightweight but adequate, and each function button must be firmly pressed. It uses a generic external power supply (which I connect to mains via a Russ Andrews cable) and the remote control is tiny. However, it is very easy to use and everything works smoothly. The CD Box S3 meets the Red Book Standard, the front loader sucks in the CD cleanly and quietly, and the music sounds great played through my Rega amp and Pro-Ac speakers. Plus it didn't break the bank. I can ask for no more, this is a serious CD player.

Looks great but is somewhat disappointing
10 January 2023  |

I love the form factor of this little CD player, it looks terrific.

However I had to send mine back to get fixed as the display would often show 2 things at once.

Sometimes when putting a cd in and before pressing play, it would play a blast of the first track then stop. Then on pressing play it would continue from the point it stopped.

The remote doesn’t really work unless your really close and get the perfect angle.

The buttons don’t work that well either, sometimes I have to press the power button 7 or 8 time before the unit powers up and the other button’s aren’t much better.

Since sending it back for repair, nothing’s really changed which is a shame as when it does play, it sounds great.

My main problem is that I LOVE the look of the project hi-if equipment and despite all the above I might give the ds3 version a go to see if it’s any better.

-------------- *Update from customer - 04/05/2023

I would like to update it to a 4 star review as I have recently purchased a new remote from direct from Henly audio and that part now works like a dream. I clearly had a faulty remote and from the looks of things it was also an order model.

I still get the odd screen burp but I love this CD player.

Could you let me know how I can update my review and I'll gladly do so.

Thanks and best regards
