AVID's Pulsare and Pulsus phonostages have established high regard with customers and press alike.

Directly related to the Pulsus the Pellar brings the possibility of owning an AVID phonostage to a new entry level price point. Unusual at this price level, there are three gain options for MM, low and high gain MC cartridge types.

As with its bigger relation this is an un-balanced design, but still keeping noise exceptionally low, even with an integrated power supply.

Distortion across the audio spectrum is exceptionally low and with impressive headroom, a character common to all our electronic designs.

Pellar retains the high-specification components of the Pulsus, including the gold-plated RCA connections and with the gain settings still easily adjustable from the underside of the casework.

Cartridge resistance value is set to 47k, suitable for MM cartridges. There are additional RCA connections on the rear panel to allow customised resistance loading plugs to be used, so that any resistance value can be set for any cartridge. This offers exceptional flexibility and precision.

The passive RIAA (with Neumann HF correction) circuit using high-end capacitors is retained, helping maintain linearity of reproduction. The new internal regulated power supply provides refined smooth power to maintain its poise.

In keeping with exceptional high standards, the Pellar is completely manufactured within AVIDs own facility. Everything from PCB assembly, testing and quality control to the high quality casework ensures a desirable sounding product with exceptional value.

Unexpectedly good

I decided to upgrade from my Ifi phono zen, and the upgrade was surprisingly good, much lower noise from the record surface and a sound I could really enjoy, I mostly stream but this unit is changing my mind. A great upgrade. Used on a project debut carbon evo with AT540ml cartridge.

I'm disappointed
20 February 2019  |

at high gain (70 dB), there is a background in the right channel. Because there is a power cable connector next to the RCA output. I had to take out the toroidal transformer in a separate unit. The background disappeared. This is unacceptable for such an expensive Phono-stage.

I have now had this for just over a month and I am still amazed at the detail and clarity of sound it produces. I was a little hesitant about purchasing one as it was replacing one that was a fifth of the cost, but I needn't have worried the Pellar is worth every penny. It is definitely a case of quality in, quality out and the Pellar is capable of eking out every last bit of detail from the mix. Be prepared to hear things you have never heard before, even as in my case from LP's you've had for 30 years or more
