Pro-Ject Phono Box Ultra S2 Phono Stage

Pro-Ject Phono Box Ultra S2 Phono Stage is like no other phono preamplifier in its segment. The incredible success of the Phono Box Ultra 500, incited Pro-Ject to introduce this marvellously sounding phono preamp into the regular S2 line. The solid metal casing protects against interference and the internal design remains as spectacular as before.

No OpAmp

Pro-Ject are offering a fully discrete, OpAmp less design, which enabled us to realize an incredibly harmonious sound. On top of this, they decided to use polystyrene capacitors, which significantly contribute to the high-end sound of the Phono Box S2 Ultra. These capacitors are known amongst audiophiles as the holy grail for phono preamplifiers. The split RIAA equalization enables a pin-point accurate representation of the RIAA curve, a luxury many other phono preamps do not possess.

  • Audiophile Performance

A phono stage with sparkle
12 October 2024  |

I’m using the phono box S2 ultra with my mono cartridge, and it’s sounding very nice. Bass is deep and tight, but my favourite thing about it is a nice amount of sparkle it gives to the higher frequencies. A real bargain.

Affordably priced, excellent preamp
31 May 2023  |

This pre-amp was out of stock elsewhere, so had to order it from Analogue Seduction. Competitively priced, and arrived promptly. Greatly improved the clarity of my Sumiko Moonstone cartridge equipped Pro-Ject X2 compared to the phone preamp built into my high-end integrated amp. Couldn’t be happier with my purchase!

Defineately great value. The true worth is its noticeable adjustability. If you have a few carts and your on a budget a no brainer.

previously i was using ps audio pre from 70s,the Cambridge audio, schiit mani and one integrated with by marantz amp i found this less noisy spacious low with much pronounced double bass ,high are also much separated, clean and over all music is much knitted ,big stage much forward presentation i played with ortofon 2m red, goldring e3,nagaokamp110.all 3 carts sounded way much better than my previous setup .in my opinion very good phono to start with ,there are options available at lesser price but one should no go below this to enjoy/justify vinyl

Affordable, cohesive and kickass. Has the transistor magic.

Hi, I prefer Phono Box Ultra S2 over my iFi Zen Phono (2021 buy) and Project Phono Box (2007 buy).

This discrete design brought back the coherence and fatigue free listening I was searching for since my vintage preamp from the 80s died.

Sound is textured, detailed and without coloration. No grittiness. Slam and roundness of bass is better. Treble extension and air around instruments is okay. One won't notice it much.

Unit is hot to touch once operational, nothing alarming though. I believe it is working in Class A. (@Project guys - please update, if you are reading this)

Highly recommended and worthy buy in the price range. Get rid of those opamps, they never did anyone good.😉

Surprisingly good

Airy treble, warm mids, tight bass.
No complaints. Unit becomes slightly warm after a while. Initially worried about the switching AC power adaptor exhibiting noise but so far none detected.

Excellent quality in build and more importantly on the sound once the settings have been established. Treble was much smoother on the ESL63's. Recommended.
