Wharfedale Evo 4.4 Speakers (Pair)

Wharfedale’s new EVO 4 has grown out of the extensive research and development that produced the ELYSIAN flagship loudspeakers and borrows much of the technology involved in ELYSIAN.

The primary focus is on the AMT development resulting in a radically different way of reproducing high frequency detail efficiently and accurately. Similar cabinet technology to ELYSIAN provides a stable and solid foundation for the drive units with radiused edges to help integrate the driver output with the room acoustics. In addition the unique SLPP bass reflex system, as developed for ELYSIAN, is now incorporated in EVO 4.

High-performance at an accessible price

The Wharfedale Evo 4.4 speakers have been developed with technologies and quality materials to provide a high quality sound at an affordable price. Working to evolve the sound quality, Wharfedale have based the Evo series off concepts from their popular Elysian speakers to promise high-end sound but with a smaller price tag.

AMT Tweeter

Evo 4.4 incorporate the same technology as Wharfedale's flagship Elysian speakers such as the Air Motion transformer (AMT) tweeter, a high-frequency driver that provides minimal distortion and maximum accuracy by moving the air in a different way then a conventional dome.

Dynamic performance from anywhere in the room

The Evo 4.4 is designed with large scale sound in mind, ideal for home cinema systems. Combining the AMT tweeter with with a fabric dome mid-range the speakers ensures listeners are met with a dynamic reach and clear defined sound wherever they are in the room.

Excellent Sound

Alongside this the speakers reach great volumes with ease. The large floor-standing speakers are as impressive to look at as they are to listen to. Music will sound refined and superbly detailed; the Evo 4.4's truly showcase premium quality performance.

This is my quick review on both the speakers and the service I received from Analogue Seduction. A friend and myself made the trip to Analogue Seduction to check out two sets of floor standing speakers. I had read good things about the Fyne F501 speakers and also the Wharfedale Evo 4.4's. When we arrived, we were made very welcome and were shown into a very pleasant room where the Evo 4.4's were already in place and being run with a Primare I25 amplifier and a Rega CD player.

We sat down, were offered coffee and then put on some well know (to us) music. First impressions were good as we were presented with a wide and deep soundstage which was very open, clear and airy. Several CD's followed of a diverse spectrum of musical styles and all impressed. However, none of the music was tiring in any way, which was good. Next up came the Fyne F501's and these were what I had already thought I would be returning home with. Whilst these were obviously very good speakers, to us, the soundstage was a lot smaller and more 'forced' somehow.

The bass was also more homogenous and it wasn't as easy to follow and the overall sound was more muddled. Now this could have been down to the partnering electronics but unfortunately, they didn't work for me.

Going back to the Wharfedale's, the fit and finish is top notch, especially for the money and we both said that if we weren't already aware of the price, we would have thought that they were at least £2500 speakers. This makes them even more of a bargain, in my opinion.

One caveat is that I would suggest that these will work best in a medium to large room but the good news is that in smaller spaces, Wharfedale do a smaller floor stander ( Evo 4.3) and a smaller still, stand mount, the Evo 4.2. Not heard either but I would imagine that they would be similar in flavour to the 4.4's as they all contain the same AMT tweeter and 50mm dome mid range and then carbon fibre bass drivers of varying size.

So to sum up, I didn't end up buying what I thought I would but am very happy nonetheless, both with the speakers and the excellent unforced and unhurried service at Analogue Seduction, so Thank you to both Martin and Dave, who are top blokes!
